Responding To The Call, VRL Now Has COVID-19 Testing for All Laboratory Animals
Monitoring continues to be vital to the quality of drug development and it is VRL’s goal to assist you as much as possible. To facilitate this, we are now able to offer COVID-19 testing for all your laboratory animal models. And, because we understand that timing is critical, we’ll get the answers you need in 48-72 hours. Details about this new test can be found below:
Acceptable Species: Mouse, Rat, Non-Human Primate, Guinea Pig, Hamster, Gerbil, Rabbit, Peromyscus, Cotton Rat, Squirrel, Vole, Ferret, Dog, Cat, Swine, Sheep, Horse, Goat, Bovine

Test Code | Infectious Agent | Specimen Required | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
8597 | 2019-nCoV (SARS-CoV-2) -RT-PCR | Respiratory specimens (including: nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal aspirates or washes, nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, nasal mid-turbinate swabs, anterior nares swabs, broncheoalveolar lavage, tracheal and lower respiratory tract aspirates), fecal swabs in Cary-Blair transport medium, stool in sterile screw-top containers, fresh or frozen tissues, environmental swabs. For swab specimens, place swabs in viral transport media, universal transport media, liquid Amies media, 1-3 ml of molecular grade phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or normal saline. Swab specimens should be collected only on swabs with a synthetic tip (such as polyester or Dacron®) with aluminum or plastic shafts. Swabs with calcium alginate or cotton tips with wooden shafts are not acceptable. Ship overnight with cold packs. | The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious viral infection caused by 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was emerging in Wuhuan City, Hubei Province, China in December 2019 and then becomes a pandemic in humans. Non-human primates are also vulnerable to be infected with 2019-nCoV. Experimentally infected rhesus macaques with 2019-nCoV had been shown to develop mild pneumonia although no fever was observed, similar to mild forms of COVID-19 in humans. This assay detects 2019-nCoV viral RNA from samples. |

8597 | 2019-nCoV (SARS-CoV-2) -RT-PCR | Oral Collection: Insert swab into oral cavity and twist or turn the swab to ensure contact with mucosal lining. Environmental Swab: Swab area of interest and insert swab into transport tube. Feces: Place a small amount of feces into a sterile collection Tube (mice=2-3 pellets, rats=1 pellet) Cell Lines: 2 vials of 1ml each of 1×107 cell culture media or equivalent amount of cells pelleted Tissue: 10-20 mg of each tissue or pooled tissue |
Only use individually wrapped, sterile swabs when collecting biological materials for testing. If the swab is manufactured with a transport tube, insert the swab into the tube and place into a sealable biohazard bag. If the swab is not manufactured with a transport tube, snip the tip off into a microcentrifuge tube. Place into a sealable biohazard bag. Freeze sample(s), ship on dry ice if available. If dry ice is not available, send frozen sample(s) on enough cold packs to keep sample(s) frozen during shipment. |
